On April 23, Landwins announced that it would close the St. Marys plant in Pennsylvania, and that about 175 employees would be affected. In addition, production facilities at the Juarez plant in Mexico, which supports St. Marys, will be shut down, affecting about 125 employees.
It is reported that production at St. Marys will be completely stopped by the end of October 2019. The closure of the plant is scheduled to be completed in the summer of 2020. Landwins will support all affected employees through this transition period.
Over the years, the traditional lighting business at St. Marys has been declining as consumers switch to long-life, energy-efficient LED bulbs, Landwins said. In addition, the market price of LED bulbs has declined, while their life expectancy has increased, so the demand for replacing the bulbs is also decreasing. Therefore, it is no longer economically viable for the company to continue operating St. Marys.
