As a transition of Micro LED display technology, Mini LED is more mature in manufacturing technology and more complete in production equipment, making it easy to mass-produce related products. Mini LED adopts backlight design, micro chip and other technologies to achieve thin, high image quality, low power consumption and other characteristics. The performance level is close to OLED, which is superior to OLED in brightness and color development. Mini LED is based on the application of backlight, and can be applied to automotive panels, outdoor displays, large-size TVs, mobile phones, e-sports and other fields. According to Jibang Consulting, the overall output value of Mini LED will reach 1 billion US dollars in 2023. At present, Taiwan LED manufacturers layout Mini LED is very active, Jingdian, Ronda, Accumulation, Innolux, AUO, Hongqi, Yiguang all said that this year will achieve the mass production of Mini LED products. Mainland manufacturers are also in the air.
Vehicle display application
With the increase in the penetration rate of new energy vehicles and autonomous vehicles, the demand for vehicle displays has increased significantly. In 2017, the total number of global vehicle displays was about 241 million. It is estimated that the total number of global vehicle displays will reach 624 million in 2025, and the composite growth rate (CAGR) will be 13% in 2017-2025.
The all-digital car dashboard is a networked and intelligent dashboard. It has more powerful functions, richer display content, and simpler, more comprehensive and more user-friendly requirements for driving. The application rate of the vehicle display panel in the instrument panel, the central control panel and the entertainment board is continuously improved, the instrument panel is developed to the combined display (10.3-12.5 吋), and the central control panel is developed to the control of the whole vehicle display (10) .1-17 吋), the entertainment board developed to non-embedded display (10.3-11.4 吋).
At present, the integrated integrated panel size 10.3-12.5吋 is the mainstream of the current automotive market, PPI (Pixel Per Inch) is about 111-199, brightness demand is 800-1000nit, high brightness display to meet the display of sunny high ambient brightness quality. In addition to the basic requirements of increasing panel size, wide viewing angle and high brightness, the development trend of automotive panels has also begun to develop irregular patterns and curved surfaces.
The current automotive display market is still dominated by high-stability LCDs, but LCDs still need backlights that cannot be made into high-surfaces, which cannot meet the new demands brought about by consumption upgrades. OLED can meet the performance requirements of automotive displays, but its poor stability of organic materials affects its application in this market.
The Mini LED is made of inorganic materials and has high reliability. Through the size of the microchip, the LEDs are arranged in a matrix in the backlight module, and the brightness can be more than 1000 nit; the special-shaped cutting characteristic enables the application of the backlight product such as the special-shaped display; and the flexible substrate can meet the requirements of the high curved surface. High contrast and wide color gamut can be obtained through the area dimming function. With its advantages in all aspects, Mini LED can seize the automotive display market and has good prospects.
Panel maker Dunker said that the company is working with the car manufacturer to develop the AM Mini LED. During CES 2018, Innolux's first publicly developed AM Mini LED automotive panel. Innolux proposes an AM mini LED architecture driven by an active matrix Active Matrix TFT circuit to achieve top-level HDR, which also has a competitive advantage in terms of price, and the product meets the needs of thin design. At present, the company has cooperated with many car shop customers to open the case, and is expected to mass-produce and ship in two years. However, Innolux said that there will be a secret weapon this year. It is expected that the AM mini LED will be put into mass production in the second half of the year.
Large screen display application
Compared with the mainstream LCD in the previous generation display field, OLED display has unique performance advantages such as self-luminous characteristics, high contrast, high visibility, low power consumption, wide color gamut and good picture quality. And the OLED itself uses an organic luminescent material to make the display thinner and more flexible. Once the OLED was launched, it ignited the TV market. With the advancement of OLED manufacturing technology, OLED TV has continuously occupied the TV market and became the mainstream of the new generation display field.
In terms of display display effect and structural design, OLED panels are significantly better than LCD displays, but the problems of poor material stability, mature manufacturing technology, and high production cost have not been solved. Due to production cost, OLED is currently mainly positioned in the mid-to-high-end display market.
Mini LED can achieve the same display effect as OLED panel through backlight design, and it is better than OLED panel in terms of material stability and display life. In terms of production cost, taking 65 吋 UHD as an example, the cost of Mini LED is close to that of OLED. And the production technology of Mini LED is relatively mature, which can further reduce its production cost and form an advantage to OLED in terms of price. Mobile display application
As the mainstream of current display technology, OLED also has a high popularity in the mobile phone display market. At present, many mobile phone brands such as Apple, Xiaomi, and vivo have adopted AMOLED screens for their flagship mobile phones. However, OLED screen cost issues, mobile phone burn-in, color degradation and other issues still exist.
Samsung mobile phones often burned screens, color deterioration and other phenomena were complained. Moreover, the current AMOLED panel production capacity is tight, and some mobile phone brand mobile phone manufacturers may not be able to obtain the supply of OLED panels.
The Mini LED chip is small in size and equipped with a backlight design. It combines with a flexible substrate to form a self-illuminating source, which can achieve light and thin structure, high curved surface, high resolution, and wide color gamut. And the stability of the Mini LED display can greatly avoid the problem of burn-in and color deterioration. With advances in technology and product design, the number of Mini LED chips required for a 6-inch mobile phone display has been reduced from 9000 to 4,000, which also contributes to cost reduction and further promotes the adoption of the Mini LED display in the mobile phone market. Ruifeng Optoelectronics said in the announcement that the 6-inch mobile phone panel is an example. At present, the cost of the LCD panel of the ordinary LED backlight design is about 20-30 US dollars, the cost of the flexible OLED is about 80-100 US dollars, and the cost of the LCD panel using the Mini LED backlight design. It is about $40-50.
According to reports, there are already mobile phone manufacturers including Huawei, OPPO, Xiaomi and other companies. It is expected that smartphones released in the second half of this year will use Mini LED backlight displays, and Taiwan panel makers are required to produce in June. Taiwan Packaging Factory Rongchuang and Panel Factory Group found that they will work together to develop a solution for Mini LED mobile phone backlighting. Innolux said it will complete the Mini LED technology within one year and expects to launch Mini LED related products in 2018. In the next three to five years, Innolux will develop more products with Mini LEDs and soft substrates.
