According to the latest report "Key Technologies Report of 2019 Micro LED Next Generation Display" by LED Inside, the early development of micro LED technology was dominated by patent layout, with SONY, Cree and University of Illinois as the earliest manufacturers and research institutes. Until 2014, after the acquisition of LuxVue by APPLE, other industries were driven to accelerate the development of micro LED field. In addition, manufacturers in different regions of the world have different strategies and developments for the layout of Micro LED. For example, Taiwanese factories are mainly professional contractors; Korean factories are mainly developed through strategic cooperation; Japanese factories are mainly developed within the group; European and American manufacturers are mostly located in the field with new start-ups and academic institutions; Chinese manufacturers are developing slowly, mostly in the stage of research and evaluation.
Development of Micro LED
The development of Micro LED was mainly based on patent layout in the early stage, which was in the "embryonic stage" from 2000 to 2013. Only a few pioneers had patent layout under unknown market demand. SONY, Cree and University of Illinois were the earliest manufacturers and research institutes. After 2014, they jumped into the "growth stage", mainly because of the acquisition of LuxVue by APPLE and its exhibition. Including Uniqarta, PlayNitride, Rohinni, Mikro Mesa, QMAT, VUEREAL and so on. In the past two years, the patent layout of panel factories has appeared, such as AUO, BOE, CSOT and so on. Among the numerous patent applications for Micro LED, the first three patents are huge transfer technology, display module technology and chip manufacturing technology, accounting for 80% of all patents.
